Carney launched his campaign warning us about foreign threats, but it didn’t take long for him to settle into the familiar rhythms of Liberal pragmatism. Some traditions are just too reliable to let go.
On June 18, 2023, a Canadian was murdered in broad daylight, steps from a place of worship. The government believed to be behind it is now enjoying VIP treatment at Carney’s upcoming G7 summit. One wonders if the response might’ve been different had the location, or the victim, fit a more politically convenient narrative.
When pressed, Carney doubled down on the invitation, much like he did when Trump was busy gold-plating American space democracy and Carney responded with the diplomatic equivalent of a polite cough. For a man celebrated as an economic genius, his instincts on moral leadership seem tragically underdeveloped.
Maybe it’s muscle memory from his time in the UK, where surviving the tantrums of entitled aristocrats posing as public servants was part of the job. After all, once you’ve spent years humouring overfed Brits in pinstripes, humoring autocrats may feel like second nature.
In the end, maybe this is what equality looks like: whether Indigenous or not, any Canadian can be met with silence in the face of violence.
